A Letter from Torrence Lamb

The founding letter of Robert’s List

Dear friend,

The economy feels uncertain right now. But I’ve come to believe that much of that uncertainty comes from forgetting what the economy really is. It is not just money. It is not the stock market. It is not GDP. The economy is a network of human relationships — and somewhere along the way, we stopped being able to see them.

Behind every service, every product, every storefront and every offer is a person, or a group of people, trying to create something meaningful. They have a reason they started. They have values they refuse to compromise. They have a vision for something better. Most of the time, none of that is visible. We see a category, a price, a location — and we decide. We support what is convenient instead of what is true.

“When we choose to support with intention, we strengthen our communities and build a more honest, human economy.”

That is why Robert’s List exists. The idea started with me, but the responsibility belongs to Robert Lamb. When Robert was asked what he saw for his future — what he felt called to do — he described a program that would recognize people, support businesses, and help communities see the value that already exists around them. I have never heard the purpose of this work put more plainly.

The way it works is simple, and it follows a chain. Story creates meaning. Values create alignment. Alignment creates trust. Trust creates discovery. Discovery creates support. And support creates growth. When you can see the story and the values behind a business, you can decide to support it for the right reasons — and that single decision, repeated across a community, changes everything.

So this is not only a directory. It is a trust layer for the small business economy — a place to find the people behind the business. If you run one, we want to help the world see what you have built. If you love one, we want to make it easier for you to support it well. And if you simply believe, as I do, that value should be seen, then you already understand why we’re here.

Thank you for being part of it.
